STARSPANGLED BANNER

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave!

Happy National Coast Guard Day ! ! !

A prayer:

Dear God,
May all United States Coast Guard soldiers be accompanied by Your presence as they safeguard our shores and the foundations of our liberties. Bestow upon them courage, strength, and wisdom as they encounter dangerous circumstances. Shield them from harm, both physically and spiritually, and lead them safely through all their assignments. May they serve as a beacon of hope and security for all who depend on them. We seek Your blessings for their families, who also endure sacrifices due to their service. Bring them home safely, Lord, grant them the tranquility that arises from a duty fulfilled.
Amen.

A Brief History:
Origination: The United States Coast Guard was established in 1790 as the Revenue Marine Service to enforce customs laws and prevent smuggling. It became known as the Revenue Cutter Service and merged with the U. S. Life-Saving Service in 1915 to form the modern Coast Guard. Initially, the Coast Guard served as the only armed maritime force and supported the Navy during wars. The U. S. Life-Saving Service focused on rescuing people at sea. Over time, the Coast Guard’s responsibilities grew to include environmental enforcement and security. It moved from the Treasury Department to the Department of Transportation in 1967 and to the Department of Homeland Security in 2003.

Premise: The fundamental principle of the U.S. Coast Guard is to safeguard the maritime interests of the nation, which includes law enforcement, search and rescue operations, and national security measures. This military service is distinctive as it merges maritime law enforcement with a federal regulatory function, operating under the Department of Homeland Security in times of peace and under the Department of the Navy during periods of war.

Significance: The Coast Guard enforces federal laws at sea, tackling issues like drug trafficking, illegal immigration, and fisheries violations. They also conduct search and rescue operations to save lives in distress. Additionally, they protect national security by securing ports and waterways, regulate maritime transportation, and enforce standards for maritime operations. As a unique branch of the military, they serve under the Department of Homeland Security and can support naval operations during wartime.

Other Facts: The Coast Guard is part of the Department of Homeland Security. Its main missions include maritime safety, security, and environmental protection, along with roles in national defense and law enforcement. Key functions involve search and rescue operations, enforcing safety regulations, and protecting ports from threats. The Coast Guard also supports national military strategies and assists in coastal defense. Additionally, it facilitates maritime commerce and collaborates internationally to enhance maritime safety and security. Overall, it serves as a versatile force addressing both domestic and national security needs.

Celebrated: The holiday is celebrated every year on the same day as Flag Day, June 14th!

A Few Facts:
I am sharing a few facts, and more, some trivia, some not trivial. . .

Statistics:
Here are some important facts on our United States Coast Guard:

  • Active Duty Personnel:

    • Coast Guard: Nearly 44,888 active-duty members.
    • Overall: About 1.3 million active-duty members across all branches.
  • Reserve and Guard Components:
    • Coast Guard National Guard Reserve: Roughly 6,157 personnel.
  • Total Uniformed Personnel:
    • Coast Guard: 51,045 total uniformed personnel (including active, reserve, and National Guard).
  • Other Important Facts:
    • The United States military is regarded as the most powerful globally, supported by a substantial budget and a considerable number of personnel.
    • Defense spending in 2024 was $883.7 billion, down from the 2023 figure of $916 billion, which is completely irresponsible, considering the inflation factor–putting a factor of harm’s way closer to possibility.
    • The 2025 figures are already up, it will be interesting to see how much safer America will be. United States military has also been recovering from the difficulties in recruiting due to soaring pride, dignity and honor to serve this great country.
