A Brief History:
Origination: National Chocolate Chip Day celebrates both chocolate and the chocolate chips that go with it. People celebrate every sweet day with a nice cookie. The King Arthur Flour Company is commemorating its 225th anniversary in the present year. To honor this milestone, we are embarking on a journey to delve into America’s beloved recipes, decade by decade, commencing from the year 1900. We invite you to join us on this captivating expedition through the captivating history of American cuisine. The creation of chocolate chips can be traced back to 1937 when Ruth Graves Wakefield, the owner of Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, incorporated chopped pieces of a semi-sweet Nestlé chocolate bar into a cookie recipe, giving birth to the iconic chocolate chip cookies.

More Recent Evolution: The chocolate crunch cookie, made with bits of Nestlé’s semi-sweet chocolate bar, became a sensation at the restaurant, prompting numerous requests for the recipe. Subsequently, the cookie gained widespread attention through newspaper features and radio broadcasts. As the sales of the cookie soared at the restaurant, so did the sales of Nestlé’s semi-sweet chocolate bar as people started recreating the recipe in their own homes. In March 1939, Wakefield decided to sell the rights to the Toll House name and cookie recipe to Nestlé. The recipe for the cookies, now known as Toll House cookies, was then included on the packaging of Nestlé’s semi-sweet chocolate. Nestlé even went a step further by scoring their chocolate bars into smaller sections specifically for the cookies. Additionally, in 1940, they introduced chocolate morsels designed to simplify the cookie-baking process.

Current Toll House Cookie Recipe: The Toll House cookie recipe has a long history, dating back to the early 1940s when it was first published in newspapers across the country. Despite a few tweaks over the years, the recipe remained largely unchanged from 1939 until 1979, when Nestlé’s original 40-year contract expired. Since then, Nestlé has made some minor adjustments to the recipe, such as increasing the cookie size and reducing the baking time. As a result, the Toll House cookie has evolved from a small, crispy, brown cookie to the larger, chewy, golden treat we know and love today.

More Recently: Today, chocolate chip is still the very delicious dessert that it has always attained from back in the old days every year. More and more renditions and recipes have arisen in more recent years. The microwave had given more opportunities and different styles, especially after inventing the cup-shaped round and square microwavable light grey surfaces that refract the microwave to ensure more even cooking. Newspapers.com contains a plethora of articles and recipes that chronicle the history of the Toll House cookie.
