What Do I Need to Do? The deadline for filing federal income tax returns is set for midnight on April 15th each year. If this date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or a holiday, an extension is granted, and the returns are then due on the next business day that is not a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday.

Some History: The collection of income tax in the United States began in 1862 to finance the Civil War. Initially, it was ruled unconstitutional because it was not distributed uniformly among the states. The income tax was reintroduced with the ratification of the 16th Amendment in 1913, at which point the filing deadline was March 1. This deadline was later adjusted to March 15 in 1918, and then, in 1955, it was further changed to April 15th, a date that has since been recognized as Tax Day.
