Concept: National Zoo Lovers Day encourages us to seek attendance–to plan to visit and explore our local zoos. Every year there are millions visiting zoos to see and learn about the many of animals that live there. Also being zoological parks, many serve also as breeding centers. The zoo teams up as a facility that is relied on when there are species that are endangered species or at the risk of becoming an endangered species. The zoo also provides an education to the public about all the different varieties of animals and their habitats.

Orientation: Zoos have changed from ancient animal collections to modern conservation centers, with the Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna being the oldest still open. Ancient records show that animal collections existed in Egypt and Mesopotamia around 2500 BCE, often held by rulers to show power or for rituals. For instance, the Garden of Intelligence was a large animal reserve created by the Zhou dynasty founder in China. In the 18th century, the Age of Enlightenment sparked interest in animal science, leading to the creation of zoos for education and research. The Schönbrunn Zoo, established in 1752, was the first modern zoo, opening to the public in 1779. The London Zoo, founded in 1828, played a major role in zoological research. The word “zoo” comes from “zoological garden. “

Some Background: The Vienna Zoo is the oldest existing zoo, opened in 1765. The first public zoo in the U. S. , Central Park Zoo, opened in 1864 in New York. Philadelphia Zoo holds the oldest zoo charter, formed in 1859, and opened in 1874. There are 350 zoos in the U. S. , attracting about 175 million visitors annually. Disney’s Animal Kingdom has over 9. 8 million visitors each year, and the San Diego Zoo welcomes more than 3. 2 million visitors yearly.

U.S. Origination: The Central Park Zoo in New York and the Philadelphia Zoo are regarded as the first zoos in the United States. It is a key facility for breeding rare and endangered animals. Modern zoos have changed to focus on animal welfare, conservation, and education, while creating natural habitats and providing comprehensive animal care.

Celebrated: National Zoo Lovers Day happens every year on April 8th.
