A Brief History:
Origination: The term “burrito” was first documented in the Dictionary of Mexicanismos in 1895. In the Guanajuato region of Mexico, the word translates to “little donkey” in Spanish. This nomenclature may have originated from the resemblance of the food’s packaging to the bundles and bedrolls that donkeys transport. In various other parts of Mexico, comparable dishes are referred to as “flauta.”  The burrito made its debut in the United States during the 1930s at the El Cholo Spanish Café located in Los Angeles. Since that time, it has become a popular item on menus throughout the country. Home chefs also prepare burritos, as they are both satisfying and well-liked by many.

The Burrito: A burrito consists of a substantial tortilla encasing a variety of ingredients, including meat, cheese, tomatoes, rice, beans, vegetables, and sauces. Similar to other tortilla-based dishes, the burrito offers considerable versatility. The chef can select from various meat options, such as ground beef, shredded chicken, shredded beef, or shredded pork. The choice of beans is equally diverse, typically including black, red, whole, or refried beans. Additionally, the selection of vegetables allows for either grilling or serving them fresh. To impart an authentic Mexican taste, spices like cumin, chili powder, and oregano are used. For those seeking extra crunch, chimichangas are burritos that have been deep-fried.

Makings of a Winner : Burritos are generally prepared using a flour tortilla. Even without meat, burritos can provide a satisfying meal, thanks to the inclusion of beans and cheese. They are made very easily, being able to prepare a tasty and savory burrito in the comfort of your own home.

A celebration: Chipotle reports a significant increase in demand from March to May, identifying this period as the peak season for its restaurants. In the second quarter of the previous year, revenue grew by over 18%. The company credits this growth to the popularity of its “chicken al pastor” burrito bowl and heightened customer interest during the warmer months.
