A Brief History:
Origination: If you’ve visited a carnival or amusement park, you have likely enjoyed a corn dog, which is a hot dog on a stick dipped in cornmeal batter and deep-fried. The history of the corn dog is filled with claims of various origins, but no one knows for sure who invented it. Corn dogs have existed for less than 100 years, making it surprising that it’s hard to determine their creator. Many eateries claim to be the original source. In 1942, Neil and Carl Fletcher began selling ‘corny dogs’ at the Texas State Fair. Their recipe is famous, but it’s unclear if they actually invented the corn dog concept. In 1941, a shop in Portland, Oregon, named Pronto Pup also sold a similar product. The owners, George and Vera Boyington, enjoyed success, but whether they were the true originators remains uncertain. Another contender is the Cozy Dog Drive-In in Springfield, Illinois, which began in 1946. Ed Waldmire and his friend developed the modern corn dog recipe after being inspired by a cornbread hot dog sandwich. Earlier, in 1927, Stanley Jenkins of Buffalo, New York patented a device for making corn dogs. Despite all these claims, the exact creator of the corn dog may never be known, suggesting it was an idea that many people independently came up with.
