A Brief History:
Origination: The first breakfast cereal, known as Granula, was created in the United States in 1863 by James Caleb Jackson, who managed Our Home on the Hillside, later transformed into the Jackson Sanatorium in Dansville, New York. However, Granula did not gain widespread popularity due to its impracticality, as the dense bran nuggets required overnight soaking to become palatable. Ferdinand Schumacher, a German immigrant, initiated the cereal revolution in 1854 by utilizing a hand oats grinder in the rear of a modest store located in Akron, Ohio. He established the German Mills American Oatmeal Company, which became the first commercial oatmeal producer in the United States. In 1877, Schumacher adopted the Quaker symbol, marking the first registered trademark for a breakfast cereal.

Slightly More Recent Origin: The cereal industry emerged from a blend of genuine religious convictions and commercial interests in nutritious foods. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg conducted experiments with granola, boiling wheat, rolling it into thin sheets, and baking the resulting flakes in the oven. He secured a patent for this process in 1891. In 1895, he introduced Cornflakes, which rapidly gained national popularity. In 1906, Dr. Kellogg’s brother, William K. Kellogg, after having worked alongside him, separated from his brother, acquired the rights to the corn flakes, and established the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company. His signature on each package became a hallmark of the brand and a guarantee of quality. In 1898, Charles W. Post launched Grape-nuts, followed shortly by Post Toasties. Due to the contributions of Kellogg and Post, Battle Creek, Michigan, has earned the title of the “Cereal Capital of the World.”
Who is the Prize Winner With Cereal? The origin of the idea to include prizes with cereal can be traced back to the original manufacturers of these products. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg was the first to entice children to consume his cereal by offering a prize in return for a mailed proof of purchase. Eventually, the practice evolved, and prizes began to be placed directly inside the cereal boxes.

Prizes & a Celebration: Cereal manufacturers have largely moved away from including toys in their cereal boxes. While there are occasional promotional campaigns that feature toys, such as the one conducted by General Mills in 2020, the current trend among cereal producers is to engage tech-savvy children by directing them online to obtain prizes, credits, and other incentives.
Celebrated: The holiday celebrated on March 7th every year. Cereal is enjoyed since the end of the 19th century, becoming America’s most popular breakfast food.
