The Mound Builders were the oldest known inhabitants, leaving behind earthen mounds. By the 1600s, the Dakota and Ojibwe were the main Native American groups. The Dakota lived in the south and west, hunting buffalo and farming, while the Ojibwe occupied the northern and eastern forested areas. In the 17th century, French fur traders arrived, followed by missionaries, soldiers, and settlers in the early 1800s, who displaced most Native Americans. The name Minnesota means “cloudy water” in Dakota, and the area where the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers meet is sacred to the Dakota, called Bdote, meaning “a place where two rivers come together. ”
