God bless everyone who has a family member related to someone who had to endure the atrocities of the holocaust. . .
A prayer and a moment of silence…

A prayer:
Almighty God,
As we reflect on the innumerable victims of the Holocaust, we lower our heads in grief for the unimaginable pain suffered by so many innocent individuals. Bestow upon us the fortitude to carry their narratives within our hearts, ensuring that the horrors of that era remain ever present in our consciousness. In Your boundless compassion, assist us in grasping the devastating impact of hatred and prejudice, and lead us towards forgiveness for those who have permitted such darkness to flourish. Let this remembrance inspire us to actively oppose intolerance in all its manifestations, choosing empathy and love amidst division. O God, strengthen us to serve as beacons of hope, advocating against injustice and diligently striving to create a world where every individual is cherished and respected, liberated from the blight of hatred. May the memory of the victims serve as a perpetual reminder to prevent the recurrence of such atrocities.
Amen.

A Brief History:
Significance: Each year, the global community commemorates one of the most devastating events in contemporary history. This somber occasion is referred to as the Holocaust. The Holocaust took place during World War II, during which Nazi Germany systematically murdered millions of innocent individuals. This day is also recognized as Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Atrocities: Nazi Germany stands as one of the most malevolent regimes in history. Within a span of less than four years, they systematically persecuted and murdered millions of individuals. Among the groups that faced severe oppression were those of the Jewish faith, with estimates indicating that six million Jews lost their lives during the Holocaust. The actions of the Nazis against the Jewish population are recognized as a genocide.
Genocide: Genocide is defined as the intentional extermination of individuals belonging to a specific ethnic group. Nevertheless, the atrocities committed by the Nazis extended beyond the Jewish population. Under this malevolent regime, hundreds of thousands of individuals from various other groups also lost their lives. Some of the examples are:
- 7 million Soviet civilians
- 3 million Soviet prisoners of war
- 1.8 million Polish civilians
- 312,000 Serb civilians
- Up to 250,000 people with disabilities
- Up to 250,000 Gypsies
- Around 1,900 Jehovah Witnesses
- Thousands of homosexuals
Most Jews died in concentration camps, with Auschwitz being the most notorious, where around one million Jews perished. Some died from disease or starvation, while others were killed in gas chambers. Many were forced into ghettos, and others were shot and buried in mass graves. Famous books and movies about the Holocaust include Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, The Hiding Place, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and films like Schindler’s List. Many creative works honor the victims, survivors, and heroes who saved Jews.
Never Forget: The remembrance is observed every year on January 27th to honor those who suffered and/or died in the holocaust. We will never forget the horror that encompassed World War II.
