The Beginning Years: It is believed that the initial settlement with Florida’s ancient history began around over 5,000 years ago with the arrival of hunter-gatherers who followed large animal herds and foraged for food. Paleoindians were the first inhabitants before the large animals went extinct. The Timucua farmed, hunted, and gathered. The Calusa, called the “Shell Indians,” used shells to make mounds. The Belle Glade Culture thrived around Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River Valley from about 500 BC to AD 1700.

More History: Spain ruled Florida from the 16th century until the 19th century. Great Britain had a brief rule over Florida from 1763 to 1783, after Spain transferred it to Britain to settle the Seven Years’ War. Britain split Florida into East Florida and West Florida before returning it to Spain in 1783 to resolve the American Revolutionary War. Florida became a U. S. territory in 1821. Historic sites include Fort Matanzas National Monument, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, and Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve.

Climate of Florida: Florida has a climate is known for its humid subtropical climate with long, hot summers and short, dry winters, shaped by its location, the ocean, and winds. In winter, January temperatures range from the 50’s°F in the north to the 60’s°F in the south, while July is the hottest month with average temperatures between 81°F and 83°F. Heat indexes can exceed 110°F. The wet season runs from May to October, with heavy thunderstorms, and the average annual precipitation is 53.7 inches, mainly in warmer months. Most of Florida is humid subtropical, except for the southern part, which has a tropical savanna climate. The Miami area, southwest Florida, and the Keys have a tropical wet-and-dry climate. Factors affecting Florida’s climate include its latitude, the heat-storing oceans, and the Bermuda high pressure system that brings warm, moist summers. Florida has approximately 237 days per year on average, with the second highest average of sunny days, at 65% of days being sunny.
