A Brief History:
Origination:  National Religious Freedom Day, of which President Bill Clinton signed into law with the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) and the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA).

Evolution:  National Religious Freedom Day is observed annually to honor the signing of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom on January 16, 1786. This day has its roots in Thomas Jefferson’s significant statute, which later influenced Congressman Fisher Ames in formulating the establishment clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Religious Freedom Restoration Act : The RFRA was signed into law in 1993 to protect Americans’ right to practice their faith. It limits government restrictions on religious liberty to the least restrictive means necessary.

International Religious Freedom Act: The IRFA was signed in 1998, promotes religious freedom as a U. S. foreign policy, encouraging religious freedom in countries that violate it and advocates for individuals persecuted for their beliefs.

What it Breaks Down To: The legislation ensures the essential right to practice one’s religion openly, free from the threat of harassment, imprisonment, or violence. Furthermore, the law allows individuals to change their religious beliefs without facing any form of punishment. In the United States, individuals of various faiths possess equal rights to engage in their religious practices.
