Today was National Human Trafficking Awareness Day for 2025. To start the year and new upcoming Administration off right, being smarter by knowing what human trafficking is paramount, so that no matter what the news may be telling you, you are aware of the cost to humanity for the incidence of human trafficking. The following is a scenario similar of which is happening everyday down at our border. This story is dated 2011, which makes what is going on today, no different than what has happened in the past.

👤 The Act:

  • Recruitment. Recruits are often drawn from foreign countries by several enticing factors, including:
    • The assurance of an excellent employment opportunity.
    • The allure of the “Land of the Free.”
    • More favorable living conditions compared to their home country.
    • Opportunities for career advancement.
    • The possibility of gradually relocating their entire family, beginning with one member.
    • Being lured by a partner to follow him/her to cross the border.
  • Recruitment: Where? The recruitment process with small, medium or even large cartels that happens in all of small, medium and large cities. The scene is not limited to, but largely this process will include an auction style scenario whereby promises of “The Good Life” are promised and the recruiters are only going to take a certain amount of recruitees. Demands are fulfilled by several of different types of fraud-style activates, like:
    • Demanding recruits to pay a “fee” to be included. The recruiters are adamant to try and snag as much if not all of a family’s life savings. The persons who give the most are offered “more services” and a better place in line of getting a better job when they arrive in the destination country.
    • By defrauding the recruitee, the family is devastated to the point where they become dependent on the “clan.” With no savings left, they are that much more enticed do what is demanded in the original country, once they are seperated from the recruitee.
  • Separation and transportation. Once the “fee'” is paid, the recruited individual will hurriedly be separated from the family. The person is often driven is a van or truck with little or no water, in a very hot and encapsulated vehicle with little or no light or oxygen, without any regard to humanity.
  • The border and transfer. Depending on the cartel’s intentions, there are two scenarios. Most of the time in 2010 and prior, the intention of the cartel is to be a “got away,” so that the incidences go undocumented. this scenario may have changed recently due to the Biden administration’s seriously inhumane border policies. Once past the border, the recruited person is driven into or taken by foot to a pre-planned destination.
  • The not-so-good life and harboring. Pretty close to the beginning of an introduction to the new land, it becomes quite obvious that the “promised” conditions in the promised land are not of which that was promised. New demands are almost immediately ordered of the recruited person. If the demands are not met, threats to family in the domestic land are made. By doing this, the recruited person suffers duress. I can disappointment given the effort invested in verifying that this would be a genuine job opportunity, but the fact that the recruit doesn’t know the dangers imminent are even way more horrible than imaginable. Often times the individual will be in closed cages and suffer a style of slavery.
  • Demands. The human trafficking involves individuals to be subject to the following means of atrocities:
    • Force, including physical and emotional
    • Fraud
    • Being lied to
    • Coercion
    • Exploitation that can manifest in various forms:
    • Forced labor
    • Sexual slavery
    • Commercial sexual exploitation
    • Becoming dependant on many forms of drugs
  • Keeping a family separated is not by chance. The cartels know that by keeping the family separated, coercion is way more possible. It makes the following not only possible, but a continuable cycle:
    • Consistent illegal income for the cartel on both ends:
      • The cartel on the homeland end often bilk the family with the promise of reuniting. Sometimes the recruiters will offer a runiting by turning over more recruits.
      • The trafficked person cannot talk or communicate with the family, so the cycle is repeatable without an ability to break the cycle.

👤 The Breakup:

  • The process of being in this horrible situation can be broken by one or more of the following:
    • Police. If the person who has been trafficked is lucky, the police may be of assistance by being at the right place at the right time.
    • Escape. If the person who has been trafficked is able to break free away from and out of the surveillance of the cartel, escape can be obtained, and the person can try to get some type of assistance in the way of asylum or other means of recovery. Sometimes it may not be feasible to return to the original country due to the danger that is imminent in the cartel in that country. This often keeps families separated for years and decades, and sometimes permanently.
    • Rescue. Sometimes a private organization and/or people, persons will aid the rescue of some of the people who have been trafficked.
  • The cartel will never stop. It’s really important to note that the person who is part of any one of these rings will need more than luck to obtain a “release” from the chains of that type of slavery.
  • Government intervention. With a recently week policy at the Biden administration, I’m pretty sure that this situation could only be worse than in previous decades. It is absolutely paramount that in order to come to aid of such individuals, that we have a strong policy and administration to break up of these militant cartels. The people involved in this type of heinous crime deserve proper law end=forced to put them out of business for good!

👤 A Prayer:

Dear God,
God of liberation, we pray for all your children who are enslaved by human trafficking. Free them from their bondage, heal them of their wounds, protect them from further harm, turn the hearts of their oppressors, and sustain them with hope for a new beginning in safety and peace. God our Father, you love all your daughters and sons equally and personally. We entrust to you our brothers and sisters whose lives have been touched by the pain of human trafficking. Loving Father, we pray for people who are still trapped in awful situations. We ask that your Holy Spirit would be with them in miraculous ways; that your light would comfort them in the midst of their darkness. Dear Lord, You are a God of justice and righteousness. Give strength to people who investigate and prosecute traffickers. Encourage them when they are weary. Grant courage and support to survivors when they are asked to testify against their former captors.
Amen.

National Human Trafficking Awareness Day

The following information was obtained from an anonymous source. It was very, very hard to hear to disposition involved in even thinking of dealing with such a life situation. The person involved with this story is from Mexico, and at that time in 2011 had not been able to communicate to their family in over a decade due to safety concerns. Therefore, when I heard of stories emanating from the current border problem, that the above situations were someone’s imaginary stories, I was absolutely appalled at the gross ignorance of such a position on this issue. I am so sorry to b share such a story, but I though education on the issue was not only necessary, but appropriate.
