Which State is ME:
The Beginning Years: It is believed that the initial Indigenous populations have lived in Maine for over 5,000 years, after the glaciers retreated. The Wabanaki Confederacy governed the area upon European arrival. The first European settlement in Maine was in 1604 by Pierre Dugua on Saint Croix Island. The first English settlement was in 1607 by the Plymouth Company at Popham. Colonists faced a rugged climate, Indian attacks, and hardships that led to many settlements being abandoned.

More History: The state of Maine proclaimed its independence from British attacks, whereby Maine was part of Massachusetts until 1820, when it became the 23rd state due to the Missouri Compromise. Settlers wanted their own state because reaching Boston for meetings was difficult. Notable events include residents burning British tea in 1774 and a Bowdoin College professor who became a brigadier general during the Civil War, known for his bravery at Gettysburg.

Climate of Maine: Maine has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Winter is cold and snowy, with average temperatures from 25°F in the south to below 15°F in the north, and snowfall typically from late October to April or May. Summer is warm and wet, averaging near 60°F in the north and near 70°F in the south, with July as the warmest month. Fall and spring feature moderate days and crisp evenings. Maine’s climate is affected by its location, northern latitude, and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Weather can change quickly, with temperatures varying abruptly. The 1998 Ice Storm caused power outages and extensive damage. Maine has approximately 200 sunny days average per year, with 55% of days being sunny.

More About Maine: Throughout the years, Maine has earned the titles of being famous for its rocky coastlines, mountains, forests, and food, especially wild lowbush blueberries and seafood like lobster and clams. It has over 4,000 islands, an annual lobster yield of nearly 100 million pounds, 3,478 miles of coastline, and over 32,000 miles of rivers and streams. Freeport is home to L. L. Bean, and Maine is the first state to see daylight in the United States.

The Great Location of Maine: The state of Maine spans 320 miles in length and 210 miles wide. Maine is bordered by only one U.S.state: New Hampshire on the west, and 2 provinces of Canada: Quebec and New Brunswick on the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east and south.
