The Beginning Years: It is believed that the initial Alabama parcel was home to indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The Woodland period, from about 1000 BC to 1000 AD, saw the rise of the Eastern Agricultural Complex. The Mississippian culture, lasting until around 1600 AD, is known for building mounds, with Moundville being notable. Key groups then included the Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek, and Chickasaw. Spanish explorers first reached Alabama in the 16th century, with Alonso Alvarez de Pineda in 1519 and Hernando de Soto in 1540, but they did not settle. The first permanent European settlement was Mobile, established by the French in 1702, which later moved due to flooding. In the 1700s, Europeans, mainly from France and Canada, began to settle in Alabama to farm.

More History: The state of Alabama’s name comes from an Indian tribe within the Creek Confederacy, meaning “we stay here” or “we clear a path through the forest.” Alabama was acquired with the Native Americans in Alabama being removed from their land for cotton plantations and European American growth. Alabama was a part of the Mississippi Territory from 1798 to 1817, then the Alabama Territory from 1817 to 1819, becoming the 22nd state on December 14, 1819. In the 1830’s, most Native Americans in Alabama were removed from their land for cotton plantations and European American growth The state was significant in the Civil War, with Montgomery as the Confederacy’s first capital. In the mid-20th century, it was a key location in the Civil Rights Movement. Alabama’s population grew from over 125,000 in 1820, including about 500 free Blacks, to 300,000 by 1830, with nearly one-fifth enslaved. The state faced an economic depression after the 1837 crisis but made efforts for industrial growth in the late 1840s and ’50s. The Alabama Black Belt is known for ancient sea monster fossils, like Mosasaurs.
