A prayer:

Dear God,
O God, we ask that You please be present with and guide military personnel, giving them strength, wisdom, and grace to achieve their goals. Please, O God defend military personnel, strengthen them in their trials, and grant them courage to face perils. God bless the armed forces with courage, hope, strength, and shield them from harm and sustain their faith. O God, comfort those who have lost loved ones and give caregivers energy to support them. We ask this in love, O God, in the name of the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

STARSPANGLED BANNER

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave!

A Brief History:
Hisatory:  Today’s date holds historical significance as, on December 13, 1636, the Massachusetts General Court formally established an official militia in the American Colonies for the first time. This resolution mandated that all able-bodied men aged 16 to 60 were required to enlist. Although less organized militias had previously existed, this legal framework unified them into a structured entity, which is recognized today as the National Guard. The Massachusetts Bay Colony organized three regiments, named East, South, and North. The National Guard, which predates the United States, retains its historical connections to Massachusetts. The regiments include the 101st Engineer Battalion (formerly known as the East Regiment), the 101st Field Artillery (representing the South Regiment), and the 181st Infantry and 182nd Infantry Regiments (associated with the North Regiment).

Significance of the National Guard:  The National Guard, a branch of the United States Army, is mainly made up of citizen-soldiers who maintain full-time civilian employment, pursue educational endeavors, or frequently engage in both activities. Concurrently, they stand ready to offer assistance and safeguard the civilian population of their respective states or to be mobilized for military operations on a national scale. Following the establishment and expansion of the United States, each state formed its own militia. However, it was not until 1933 that Congress officially designated the name National Guard. This designation occurred when Congress revised the National Defense Act, thereby creating the National Guard as a distinct entity within the United States Army. Although some states had previously adopted the term National Guard, individual state militias were known by various names, such as the Mississippi State Guard and the Indiana Legion. In the aftermath of World War II, the newly formed United States Air Force created the Air National Guard. Currently, around 350,000 individuals serve in both the National Guard and the Air National Guard, constituting 39% of the Army’s operational force.

National Guard’s Mission: Every U.S. state, along with the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the territories of Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands, has both an Army National Guard and an Air National Guard. National Guard Soldiers are dedicated to serving both their communities and their nation. Their adaptability allows them to address domestic emergencies, engage in overseas combat operations, participate in counter-drug initiatives, and undertake reconstruction efforts, among other responsibilities. The National Guard consistently acts with promptness, resilience, and effectiveness, contributing to the defense of American freedoms and values. The National Guard has a full-time component, but most members serve part-time unless deployed. It offers various job specialties, including infantry, aviation, engineering, military intelligence, transportation, and finance. Additionally, there is an age limit to join; candidates must be between 17 and 35 years old.

Observed: December 13th marks the celebration of the National Guard’s Birthday.
