The Beginning Years: It is believed that the Native Americans settled in Mississippi at the end of the last Ice Age and lived as hunter-gatherers before turning to agriculture. They cleared fields with fire and stone axes, planting corn, beans, and squash. The Mississippians built large mounds to support their structures, such as homes, temples, and burial buildings. They created unique art, molded clay, and had a complex social structure which may have been organized into chiefdoms.
