The Beginning Years: It is believed that the Native American history in Indiana dates back to at least 5,000 years. The earliest inhabitants, known as Paleoindians, are believed to have arrived in the New World, including Indiana, following the conclusion of the last Ice Age. The Mississippian culture represents a significant era of advancement for Native American tribes in the region. Angel Mounds, located in southwestern Indiana, served as a prominent center of Mississippian culture from approximately 1000 to 1450 AD.

More History: The state of Indiana proclaimed  that the first Europeans arrived in Indiana in the 1670s, claimed the land for France, and then Britain controlled it for over 20 years after the French and Indian War. The United States took control after the American Revolutionary War. Indiana became a territory in 1800, and in 1816, it became the 19th state in the Union. Jonathan Jennings was the first governor, and Corydon was the first capital until it was moved to Indianapolis in 1825. The Indiana constitution banned slavery but prohibited women, Black people, and Indians from voting. Indiana was the first state to have a state-funded public school system, and Indiana University in Bloomington was established in a township designated for a public university.

Climate of Indiana: Indiana has a climate is known for its distinct seasons with varying temperatures, precipitation, and weather conditions. Spring is cool and rainy, while summer is hot and humid with average July temperatures of 74°F. Fall offers beautiful weather and scenery, while winter is cold with temperatures dropping below zero and heavy snowfall. January is typically the coldest month, with average temperatures of 22.9°F, and snowfall can range from 5 to 8 inches in the south to over 60 inches in the north. Climate change impacts include rising temperatures, increased precipitation, and earlier spring frost. Severe weather events, such as storms with wind gusts over 58 mph and hail at least 1 inch in diameter, are also experienced in Indiana. Indiana experiences an average of 186 sunny days annually, with 51% of days being sunny.

Memorable Indiana Events:  Here is a list of some events that happened in Indiana:

  • 1679: French explorer Robert de La Salle visits Indiana.
  • 1702: The first trading post is established.
  • 1715: The French build Fort Miami which later becomes Fort Wayne.
  • 1732: The first permanent settlement is established by missionaries at Fort Vincennes.
  • 1754: The start of the French and Indian War. The Indians ally with the French, but lose the war in 1763 and the British take over.
  • 1787: The Northwest Territory is formed including many future states such as Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
