Today’s Featured Flower Photo of the Day:
Old Trumpet Creeper Cow Itch Hummingbird Vine

Here is today’s featured photo flower presentation. To let 2024 shine bright, I am featuring fine photos of flowers, continuing to honor the brighter side of life again this year. Today’s Flower of the day is: Old Trumpet Creeper Cow Itch Hummingbird Vine.

The Old Trumpet Creeper Cow Itch Hummingbird Vine, or the Campsis radicans of the Bignoniaceae family are such a popular temperate plant with stunning, orange-red (pictured) ruby-red, or even yellow flowers, that have 5 shallow lobes bending backward, and an ability to grow in various environments, including disturbed forests, is aided by ants that protect it in exchange for sugary nectar secreted by extrafloral nectaries on its branches and flowers. The plant also has a unique floral anatomy, with a bilobed stigma that opens and closes to promote pollination. Researchers have found that the stigma closes permanently after at least 350 pollen grains are deposited, ensuring successful fertilization of ovules. The plant’s flowers remain on the vine after fertilization to continue attracting pollinators, primarily ruby-throated hummingbirds. This pollination strategy has evolved to maximize seed set by ensuring the deposition and germination of ample pollen grains. Overall, the trumpet creeper’s ability to recruit bodyguards, unique floral anatomy, and pollination strategy highlight its fascinating biology and successful reproduction.
