Poverty Point, a Late Archaic site, is the largest and most well-known in Louisiana, featuring an earthen pyramid, a bird effigy mound, and ridges that may have housed 500 to 1,000 people. Other cultures include Marksville, the ancestor of the Natchez and Taensa peoples, along with the Mississippian cultures like Plaquemine and Caddoan. Early Woodland cultures like Tchefuncte and Lake Cormorant also existed, contributing to the many mounds and earthworks found in Louisiana, making it a center for American Indian mound construction due to its mild climate and abundant resources.
