The Beginning Years: It is believed that Kentucky’s ancient history is diverse, dating back over 5,000 years ago, with Paleoindian groups arriving first, living in small groups and using stone tools for hunting and scraping. The Mississippian culture emerged around 900 AD, building ceremonial earthen mounds in central and western Kentucky. The Fort Ancient culture appeared in eastern Kentucky, similar to the Mississippian culture but lacking ceremonial mounds.
