EXCERPT ONE
I stare up at him, marveling at how handsome a man he’s grown into over the last decade. Same shoulder-length, but messy blond hair. Same deep and penetrating blue eyes. But his shoulders are broad and muscular now. His jaw set with that hard, squared-off chin and covered in just the right amount of golden stubble.  

He was still a boy of eighteen when I was Chosen and now he’s a man. Did I miss something and not realize it? It didn’t feel that way as time was passing. Finn and I were never really apart, we just led separate lives. But we’re not kids anymore and it just right now occurs to me that we gave up something irreplaceable so I could be a Spark Maiden.

Our youth.

We’re only twenty-eight, it’s not like we’re old. But still, it feels like a loss. 

“I want this to be over now, Finn. I don’t wanna go back to the Maiden Tower. I wanna stay here with you and never leave.”

He smiles as he kisses me. “Three months. We’re practically there, Clara. Nothing will get in the way.” 

“I know. But I want it now.”

“We’ve waited ten years. We’ll be together forever before we know it.”

Then he pulls away, slips his hand around to the small of my back, and guides me over to the door. We press our foreheads together and sigh, lingering in this embrace for one more moment. You’re my future. And the god can’t take you away from me, Clara Birch. Not ever. Our love is destiny.”

EXCERPT TWO
Oh, how they howled. All night long. Just three women. But three is more than enough to make those anguished screams that echoed through the dorms last night.

Eight floors up—at least. They could’ve been in Gemna’s quarters, and then it would’ve been ten. Or Clara’s, and it would’ve been nine. But still, we could hear them. The entire dorm heard them.

Even we, the down-city rebels sent here to disrupt and tear things apart, felt their suffering.

Haryet Chettle’s hours are now numbered. 

Tonight, she dies. 

Or maybe not. No one knows what happens to the Maidens. My best guess is that the god eats them. He devours them, and at the same time, he steals their spark. And this spark comes back to us as lights in lamps, or hot water from pipes, or heat in the orchards and greenhouses. 

But I guess it’s just as likely that he rapes them? Tortures them? Tears them to shreds?

He’s an angry god, after all.

Because he’s a dying god. 

And we are part of the reason he’s dying.

EXCERPT THREE
“Ya know, I was sympathetic of your plight earlier today. But now you’re just… unpleasant.”

The nerve of him. 

“Not only are you unpoised, and improper, and impolite, but you’re… a coward, Clara. This is how cowards act. You were the one who wanted to be a Spark Maiden. You were the one who signed up for this. You were the one who spent the last ten years sucking on the teat of that god like you earned it. But you didn’t earn it. Tonight is the night when you earn it. So suck it up, and at the very least, act half as dignified as all your friends who went before you. If not for me or the city, then for the Little Sisters looking up to you. For Gemna, who will be losing her shit tonight, scared out of her mind. And maybe this is what you want? Maybe you’re just trying to make sure that you leave us more miserable at the end of the day than when we started it. And you know what? That is the definition of ‘coward.’ So yeah, you’re acting like a fucking coward.”

EXCERPT FOUR
His body eases in up next to mine, his hand on my stomach. But he slowly slides it down between my legs. “One day… I’m gonna read you, Clara Birch. I’m gonna get that story your spark is so desperate to tell, and I’m gonna know you better than anyone else in this fuckin’ universe.”

And then he kisses me, and while he’s kissing me he puts me on top of him. My legs straddling his hips. My hands sliding under his arms and gripping his shoulders like I don’t ever want to let go. He’s got one hand between my legs, and the other is around the back of my neck, holding our lips together as our mouths work in unison. 

But a moment later, he’s inside me. And this is nothing like the sex I’ve ever had before. Because my entire body is lit up with spark, and it’s so powerful that it lifts off me the way those butterflies did on Jasina Bell’s dress. The whole room is blue, and the spark is floating all around us like snow falling in mountains I have never seen before, and this man underneath me is moaning sweet things into my ear as we make love.
