A Brief History:
Origination: The concept of the picnic (pique-nique) was initially cultivated by the French nobility in the 17th century, albeit in a form that differs from our contemporary understanding. These gatherings were essentially indoor dinner parties where each attendee was anticipated to bring a dish, wine, or make a financial contribution towards the meal. It was during the French Revolution that this practice began to spread internationally.

Evolution of the Notorious Picnic Bench: The picnic table has a rich history that goes back to the early 1800’s. The Civilian Conservation Corps helped make the Lassen tables famous in the U.S. during the 1930’s. Originally, these wooden tables were used for large outdoor gatherings. Nowadays, they are still popular for family meals and events outside, and many people also use them as dining tables at home. There are various styles and sizes of picnic tables available today, so you can easily find one that suits your needs. They provide a peaceful spot in a busy world and are great for hosting events like barbecues and weddings. The first picnic table was created by Jean de la Fontaine in France, but it took over 600 years for William H. Pratt to make the first one in America. Initially, picnic tables were introduced during a time when society was focused on the British class system, but over time, they became symbols of freedom and democracy. Typically found in parks and campgrounds, picnic tables have a flat surface for eating and working, with benches on either side. The early 1800s saw the introduction of picnic tables to make outdoor dining more enjoyable. Today, both adults and children love picnic tables for their flexibility and ease of use.
What About the Picnic Basket? The picnic basket that has been sitting in our garage for about 15 years. With our work schedules changing, we’ve been going on more day trips. The picnic basket is great for carrying snacks or a full meal. Since restaurants can be unreliable (sometimes closed or crowded), it’s easier to bring our own food to a park, a field, a rest area, or even the steps of a quiet church. One of our favorite picnic memories was when we traveled to Texas and had lunch with friends on the steps of a small white church in a quiet town. When our kids were younger, we often had picnics, but the one at Kennesaw Mountain stands out; passing by that place brings back fond memories. The picnic basket made both of these experiences simple and enjoyable.

What an American Picnic Consists of: Human spirit, culinary diversity, and adventure are celebrated through picnics. They are personal, with food, dining partners, and venue chosen by us. They differ from community feasts, al-fresco dining, and fair food. Cookbooks and magazines suggest outdoor menus, but they can’t fully capture true American picnic fare. People in the same place and time may have very different picnic tables. Newly emigrated people dine on old world favorites, while wealthy folks have professionally prepared hampers. The line between traditional picnic and outdoor cooking is often blurred, with many outdoor meals combining both traditions. A lot of times people go out of the way to get together in a forest preserve or a grove. Any way, a picnic is a very welcome gift of the summer months (or fall. . .or spring).
Celebrated: National Picnic Month is celebrated every year the whole month of July to celebrate the heart of the summer months! The month-long celebration takes place from July 1st to 31st.

Different Types of Picnics:
The top three outdoor recreation activities enjoyed by Americans are:
- Gathering with family and friends at the park
- Visiting the pool
- Taking a walk or hike along a local trail.
Different Types of Picnics:
There are seven different main types of picnics:
- Homemade: There is no need to stress over preparing an elaborate three-course meal or filling numerous containers. Engage your children in the preparation of the picnic. A simple meal consisting of a sandwich, a piece of fruit, some steamed vegetables, and a bottle of juice or lemonade will suffice. This can also serve as an excellent opportunity to teach younger children how to prepare their own snacks, thereby fostering essential life skills.
- Pre-Made Snacks: If you find yourself lacking the energy to cook at home, consider visiting your local grocery store for ready-made meals and snacks. Options such as salads, sushi, sandwiches, cheese and ham platters, cut fruit, and bottled beverages are readily available.
- Simple Appetizers: To keep children engaged and out of mischief, provide them with food items suitable for dipping. Enjoyable options for dipping at a picnic include French bread, chips, vegetables, and even fruit. Consider offering dips such as hummus, guacamole, salsa, and sour cream. For adult guests, a crab dip or a pre-prepared specialty ceviche would be delightful additions.
- Backyard Grilling: If the thought of loading children into your vehicle seems overwhelming, consider hosting a picnic in your own backyard. This allows them to enjoy the fresh air while you maintain a watchful eye. For main dishes, you might prepare hamburgers, chicken kabobs, hot dogs, and sausages. Accompany these with simple finger foods like carrots, cantaloupe slices, watermelon cubes, and vegetable chips. Lay a blanket on the grass, set out the cooler, and ignite the grill.
- Themed Picnics: These are a global tradition, and you can introduce a variety of international flavors to your next picnic in San Diego. Whether you prefer French, Chinese, Korean, or Spanish cuisine, a picnic provides an excellent opportunity to explore new culinary experiences while enjoying the outdoors.
- Leftovers: Eliminate the need for cooking and concentrate on enjoyment with a leftovers picnic. Simply reheat the previous evening’s dinner, pack a few appetizers, and include bottled beverages.
- Catered: For those celebrating a special occasion, opting for a catered picnic can elevate the experience and impress your guests with a thoughtfully curated menu.
