The Beginning Years: It is believed that the initial European settlement in the Delaware Valley was founded by Swedish immigrants in 1638. From 1698 to 1699, the offspring of these original settlers built Old Swedes Church (also referred to as Holy Trinity Church), making it one of the longest-standing places of worship in America that is still actively utilized.

More History: The state of Delaware proclaimed its independence from Great Britain on June 15, 1776. It earned the moniker “First State” when it ratified the U.S. Constitution on December 7, 1787, making it the first state to do so.

Climate of Delaware: Delaware has a climate is known for its temperate climate throughout the year, with average monthly temperatures varying between 75.8°F and 32.0°F degrees. The average temperature during the summer months is 74.3°F degrees, and approximately 57% of days are sunny.

The Great Location of Delaware: The state of Delaware spans 96 miles in length and  ranges in width from 9 to 35 miles, making it the second-smallest state in the United States, right after Rhode Island. It is bordered by Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and the Atlantic Ocean.

Memorable Delaware Events:  Here is a list of some events that happened in Delaware:

  • 1627: First settlement by the Swedes.
  • 1631: New Netherland Dutch build fort at Zwaanendael (Lewes, Sussex, Delaware).
  • 1638: New Sweden Swedes and Finns begins settling in the Fort Christina (Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware) area.
  • 1651: The Dutch build a fort near Newcastle.
  • 1655: New Sweden was conquered by New Netherland.
  • 1664: New Netherland including Delaware became a British colony as part of an Anglo-Dutch war.
  • 1682-1776: Pennsylvania’s governor assumes control of Delaware over the objections of Maryland’s claims as far north as Philadelphia. Delaware had its own provincial assembly after 1703.
  • 1684-1736: The colonial government of Maryland laid claim to southern and western Delaware.
  • 1694: The Government is restored to William Penn.
  • 1701: Delaware is formally separated from Pennsylvania.
  • 1703: First separate assembly convened. The same governor with Pennsylvania.
  • 1710: Settlers from Scotland to Appoquinimink, Kent County, known as Drawyer’s Settlement.
  • 1758: Men are raised for an expedition to Canada in the French and Indian War.
    1775: Richard Penn resigns his jurisdiction. A constitution formed by the people.
  • 1776: Delaware declared its independence from Britain and established a government separate from that of Pennsylvania.
  • December 7, 1787: Delaware became the first state.
  • 1861-1865: During the Civil War, Delaware was a Union state.
  • 1802: The DuPont Company is founded as a gunpowder mill.
  • 1865: Slavery is ended in Delaware with the ratification of the 13th amendment.
  • 1969: The second span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge opens.

  1. I have to say that you covered more on National Delaware Day than I ever knew!! America really is a hodgepodge of Europeans! For example: Delaware Valley was founded by Swedish immigrants in 1638. I did know that Dover was the Capital. Your review looks like a page out of my school history textbook! Good job! You covered everything! Even the weather etc. I’m going to pin this! Thank you for sharing!!
