Today’s Featured Flower Photo of the Day:
White Catswort ‘Catnip’
Here is today’s featured photo flower presentation. To let 2024 shine bright, I am featuring fine photos of flowers, continuing to honor the brighter side of life again this year. Today’s Flower of the day is the White Catswort ‘Catnip’.
The White Catswort one of many types of ‘Catnip’, or Nepeta Cataria , part of the Lamiaceae family, is a perennial shrub that grows in clusters, is a rare find in gardens compared to lemon balm. Despite its scarcity, White Catswort is relatively easy to cultivate. This wild plant, native to Germany, boasts a flavor that surpasses other balms and retains its taste even when dried. The plant’s leaves are downy, with purple mottled, white blossoms, and a distinct minty flavor. This plant as shown also has a blue to purple variety that is a match in class, but all varieties come in either of four or five petal flowers, and are clustered per chute. White Catswort is often used to make herbal tea infusions, White Catswort also serves as a great spice for fresh quarks with herbs or salads. Interestingly, it is closely related to catmint and frequently hybridizes with it when in close proximity. Usually discovered in disrupted locations, like roadsides or field borders, near streams or on unused land, this particular plant possesses fragrant foliage that tends to allure most felines, although numerous individuals do not appreciate its strong scent, which is often described as a blend of thyme and oregano with a hint of “mildly skunky” aroma. Surprisingly, cats do not show much interest in White Catswort, suggesting a different composition of essential oils compared to its relatives. They are low maintenance, and require only moderately watered conditions, and do great in well-drained soil, but also thrives in poor soils…
