A Brief History:
First Jelly-Filled Donut: The initial recipe for a jelly donut, known as sufganiyah, was documented in a German cookbook in 1485. The original formula consisted of a soft dough pocket filled with jam, however, contemporary sufganiyot are typically fried dough balls filled with jelly or custard and sprinkled with powdered sugar. Sufganiyot gained popularity in Poland by 1600 and continue to be enjoyed during Hanukkah and various other celebrations.
First Jelly-Filled Donut Day was due to a Donut Day: The women in wartime were dedicated persons who gave their services to make hard times much easier by making batches of doughnuts and coffee for the servicemen. This work became known by servicemen as the “Doughnut Girls” During World War II The Red Cross had volunteers as “Doughnut Dollies” perform the same as in the World War I era. The birthday of the United States Marine Corps on November 10th was once referred to as National Doughnut (Donut) Day in the Vietnam War, giving out Donuts in honor. A second National Donut Day is also celebrated on November 5th, which is speculated to have originated from this event, Nowadays there are more events including today’s Jelly-Filled Day event, as explained below.
