A Brief History:
Origination: Armed Forces Day, observed on the third Saturday in May, honors the men and women who serve in the United States Armed Forces. This annual celebration is part of Armed Forces Week.
Evolution: The United States Armed Forces are made up of six branches: the Army, Air Force, Space Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. In 2019, there were more than 1.3 million active-duty service members stationed in various locations across the globe. Additionally, around 800,000 reservists are on standby in the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. This occasion serves as a way to unite the nation in solidarity with the men and women who are presently serving in the U.S. military.
History: President Harry S. Truman spearheaded the initiative to create a unified holiday where citizens could gather and express gratitude towards our military personnel for their dedicated service to our nation. This single-day celebration originated from the consolidation of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson declared the establishment of Armed Forces Day, replacing the individual Army, Navy, Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, and Air Force Days.
