A Brief History:
Origination: There are various accounts about the origin of the pretzel. Most people agree that it has Christian roots and was developed by monks. According to The History of Science and Technology, an Italian monk invented pretzels in 610 AD as rewards for children who learned their prayers. He called them “pretiola,” which means “little rewards,” and they were strips of baked dough folded to resemble crossed arms. Another source claims that the invention took place in a monastery in southern France. The looped shape of the pretzel may also be connected to a Greek Ring bread used in monasteries a thousand years ago. In the Catholic Church, pretzels held religious significance in terms of both their ingredients and shape. The loops in pretzels may have had a practical purpose as well, allowing bakers to hang them on sticks for display.
U.S. Origination: The Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants introduced pretzels to North America in the 19th century, leading to the establishment of many handmade pretzel bakeries in central Pennsylvania. The popularity of pretzels quickly spread, particularly in areas like Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York in the 20th century.
