Happy International Women’s Day ! ! !
A Brief History:
1st Celebration: March 19, 1911.
Where: Globally–especially Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Campaigns across Europe.
Why: Origination has roots to stand against WWI (War of the Worlds).
Mission: International Women’s Day has become a significant milestone in the women’s rights movement, thanks to the inspiration drawn from women in other countries who have adopted this annual holiday. This special day sheds light on crucial matters such as preventing violence and abuse against women, promoting gender equality, and advocating for reproductive rights.
Early 20th Century: The roots of International Women’s Day can be traced back to the labor movements in North America and Europe during the early 20th century. It was further influenced by the “Women’s Day” organized by the Socialist Party of America in New York City on February 28, 1909. German delegates at the 1910 International Socialist Women’s Conference proposed the idea of an annual “special Women’s Day,” although the date was not fixed at that time.
Mid-20th Century: The following year marked the first demonstrations and commemorations of International Women’s Day across Europe. After the Russian Revolution in 1917, it was established as a national holiday on March 8 and celebrated on this date by socialist and communist countries. While initially associated with far-left movements and governments, International Women’s Day gained recognition from the global feminist movement in the late 1960s.
Later 20th Century: The status of International Women’s Day as a mainstream global holiday was solidified when the United Nations endorsed and promoted it in 1977. Today, it is observed as a public holiday in numerous countries, with the UN highlighting a specific issue, campaign, or theme related to women’s rights each year. This annual celebration serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for gender equality and the importance of women’s rights worldwide.
1st Date of Observance: March 8, 1913.
Celebrated: March 8th every, which is the 8th day of Women’s History Month.
