Today’s Featured Flower Photo of the Day: Common Purple Lilac
Here is today’s featured photo flower presentation. To let this year shine bright, I am featuring fine photos of flowers, continuing to honor the brighter side of life again this year. Today’s Flower of the day is the Common Purple Lilac.
The Common Purple Lilac, or the Syringa vulgaris is a is a more common scent of the spring season, a bush, almost tree with extremely fragrant purple flowers blooming near the month of May in Illinois. The Common Purple Lilac grown in a line to the north of the Southern Belt straight across the country, into New Mexico, avoiding the desserts and the west coast, all the way northward. They are very hardy from the harsh winters, being able to withstand really severe winters down to -40 degrees. The Lilac has been used to extract the Lilac oils, being collected from the flowers and used in perfumes and lotions. Most modern companies have been trying to recreate the desirable scent for air fresheners and candles, but never come close to the real McCoy. The Common Purple Lilac was brought over from Europe in the 1700’s being bred extensively to come up with many new selections/colors, going on still to today. They are great neighborly plants that attract all sorts of butterflies, pollinators and hummingbirds. They’ll be drawn to your yard by the delicious scent and the fabulous color. The Lilac is a plant not preferred by deer, and grows to the size of between 8 and 12 feet tall. The Lilac’s ideal spot to plant is in an area with full sun (at least 6 to 8 hours per day)–give them too much shade and they may not bloom.
