A Brief History:
Origination: National German Chocolate Cake Day celebrates a name that is not all it t’s look implies, as German chocolate cake did not actually originate in Germany. The cake’s origins can be traced back to 1852, when American Sam German created a type of dark baking chocolate for the American Baker’s Chocolate Company. In honor of Sam German, the brand of chocolate was named Baker’s German Sweet Chocolate.

More Recently: In 1957, precisely over a century later, a recipe for a delectable dessert called “German’s Chocolate Cake” emerged as the Recipe of the Day in the renowned Dallas Morning Star. This particular recipe, skillfully crafted by Mrs. George Clay, incorporated the use of Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate, resulting in an instant hit among dessert enthusiasts. Notably, General Foods, the proud owner of the Baker’s brand at that time, widely disseminated Mrs. Clay’s recipe to various newspapers across the nation. As these publications gradually omitted the possessive ‘s, the cake we now recognize as German chocolate cake acquired its present-day name.
