The Beginning Years: It is believed that the initial inhabitants of Wisconsin were Paleo-Indians, arriving over 5,000 years ago as hunter-gatherers. They hunted large animals and gathered plants in forests that grew after glaciers melted. They also built effigy mounds, with at least 20 in the Madison area. Other Native American groups in Wisconsin included the Ojibwa, Menominee, Ho-Chunk, and others. European exploration began with Jean Nicolet in 1634, and France claimed Wisconsin in 1672.

More History: The state of Wisconsin evolved through French exploration, the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, and the Civil War. French explorer Jean Nicolet arrived in 1634, and Wisconsin became part of the U. S. in 1783. The territory was established in 1836, and Wisconsin became the 30th state in 1848. During the Civil War, it was in the Union and sent over 90,000 soldiers. The Republican Party started in 1854, and the first dairy school was established in 1890. Other events include the first auto race in 1878 and the start of the Progressive movement.
