The Beginning Years: It is believed that People have inhabited Alaska several thousand years. in those ancient days, a natural land bridge extended from Siberia into eastern Alaska, and migrants followed herds of animals across that bridge. Those migrant groups consisted of Athabaskans, Unangan (Aleuts), Inuit, Yupiit (Yupik), Tlingit, and Haida descent. Alaska was a Russian colony from 1744 until the U.S. purchased it in the year 1867 for the sum of $7,200,000 and . In the year 1880, gold was discovered in Alaska near the Juneau. the latter portion of the 1800’s, a navy civilian administration was established in Alaska. In the year 1900, Juneau became the capital of the state. Valley in 1912 Alaska became the Alaska Territory.
More History: The state of Alaska produced half of the world’s canned tuna by the early 1900’s. When the Alaska Railroad was built between the years 1915 to 1923, with Anchorage as its base, new workers and merchants migrated into the area. The installation of military bases and defense industries in Alaska during World War II reshaped local economies. The territory of Alaska became a state on January 3, 1959.
Climate of Alaska: Alaska has a climate is known for its extremes, bearing short, mild summers and long, cold winters. Alaska’s climate varies by region and by season. The southwest area, including the Aleutians, has a subarctic oceanic climate, and the areas farther north has a continental subarctic climate. North of the Brooks Range, Alaska has a cold and dry, polar type climate with frequent winter blizzards. Alaska’s climate is influenced by its mountain ranges and its proximity location to the ocean. The greatest seasonal temperature contrast between seasons is found in the central and eastern portion of the continental interior, with average summer temperature being around 55°F to 65°F, and occasional spikes that can reach as high as 90°F. Interior winters are much colder, with temperatures ranging from 0°F to 25°F, and barely ever getting above freezing for the interim of the winter months. the northernmost city, Barrow, has temperatures that typically vary from -19°F to 47°F with extremes that range rarely below -36°F or above 60°F.
The Great Location of Alaska: The great state of Alaska is located connected to no other state in the United States. The first and most obvious extreme of Alaska is its extreme size, being the largest state in the U.S. (by far)–east to west being 2,400 miles in length; north to south being 1,420 miles in length; and a coastline that is 6,640 miles long! It is the also farthest northern state in the U.S., with part of the northern part of the state residing in the Arctic Circle. The Arctic circle is defined as the northernmost parallel demarcation line whereby the Sun never rises on the winter solace–meaning there are no daylight hours at any part of the day on December 21st. The further north you go on that winter day, the less twilight rises. The opposite is true in summer–near June 21st, in which there are no nighttime hours in a day. The Sun never goes down, and simply rotates from a high point of the day to a lower point, rotating in the sky like a large clock in the sky. Alaska is so large, the state is in two different time zones–the Alaskan time zone and the Aleutian-Hawaii time zone. Alaska is located with the Yukon Territory of Canada to the east, and between two different oceans, the Pacific Ocean to the south and the Arctic Ocean to the north. Alaska has the Bering Strait to the direct west, a channel of water so close to Russia that the part of Alaska called Little Diomede Island is just 2.4 miles away from Big Diomede Island, a part of Russia clearly visible from the U.S. One of the little known facts about Alaska is how close it truly is to Russia. Another of one of the many maximum difference aspects of Alaska, is the maximum record difference in time in the world contained on the side of the Bering you’re on–especially considering the Diomede Islands in particular. When it is noon on Monday at Little Diomede Island, it is 9 am Tuesday at Big Diomede Island and all of Kamchatka Russia.
