Which Western State was ND:
The Beginning Years: It is believed that Hunter-gatherer and agriculture societies have existed in North Dakota since around 2,000 B.C. The region was originally settles by Robert de LaSalle claimed much of North Dakota for France. The area was a part of the Louisiana Purchase and in the year 1803 became part of America as part of the sensationally large Louisiana territory until 1812. It consisted as a portion of he monstrous Missouri territory and the Rupert’s Land (U.K.) between 1812 and 1819. The general area was then converted to the Minnesota and Nebraska territories, until, along with South Dakota, it was organized into the Dakota Territory by the year 1861. The state was very sparsely populated until the arrival of the railroads in the late 1800s, and finally became a state in 1889. A great settlement boom occurred within North Dakota from 1879 to 1886, bringing in 100,000 new settlers, mostly farmers.
More History: The state of North Dakota experienced some changes throughout the 20th century. Farms gradually moved away from the monoculture focused on farming of wheat in the early part of the 1900’s and diversified with other crops like sugar beets, sunflowers and various row crops. Farms grew in size as they became more mechanized and by 1920, North Dakota was home to 77,690 each averaging around 466 acres. Today, that number has dropped to less than 30,000, with the average farm size coming in at 1,280 acres. The latest efforts are more diversified energy development and modern farming techniques.
Climate of North Dakota: North Dakota’s climate consists of continental type, and is characterized by a large variance in mean temperature, both on a seasonal and also daily basis. Precipitation ranges from low to moderate, and air flow through the region creates windy conditions. North Dakota is affected by regular changes in atmospheric air masses. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 4°F to 83°F and is rarely below -18°F or above 93°F.
The Great Location of North Dakota: North Dakota is a far-western midwestern U.S. state dominated by the Great Plains. Its easternmost large city of Fargo showcases Native American and modern art at the Plains Art Museum. The area’s immigrant history is honored at the Scandinavian Heritage Association in the city of Minot. The Great Plains give way to the rugged Badlands near the border of Montana, where the Theodore Roosevelt National Park spans the Little Missouri River.

Memorable North Dakota Events: Here is a list of some events that happened in North Dakota:
- 1682 – LaSalle claimed the entire Mississippi River drainage which included the Missouri River drainage in North Dakota, for France.
- 1713 – England receives the northern part of North Dakota from France.
- 1762 – Spain received from France land claimed by LaSalle.
- 1781 – The first known business enterprise, a fur trading post, was briefly established near the Souris River, but was soon abandoned as a result of pressure from unfriendly Indians.
- 1803 – On November 20, Spain returned the Missouri River watershed to France. Also the Louisiana Purchase transferred the area of North Dakota drained by the Missouri River from France to the United States on December 30.
- 1806 – The Lewis and Clark Expedition returned down the river on its way back to St. Louis. Their journey marked the first major American penetration of the area and was characterized by amicable relationships with native inhabitants.
- 1831 – Fort Clark fur trading post was established.
- 1885 – The American Bison is nearly extinct.
- 1889 – North Dakota becomes the 39th state.
- 1915 – The Nonpartisan League (NPL) is formed by Arthur Townley to help small farmers.
- 1951 – Oil is discovered near Tioga.
- 1960 – Lake Sakakawea is formed when the Garrison Dam is completed.
- 1997 – The Red River Valley is flooded destroying much of the city of Grand Forks.
