Today’s featured photo of the day! The feature is: Architecture – The Skies of Chicago, Illinois – An Aerial View
Here is today’s featured photo presentation of an east to southeastern view from the John Hancock Observatory. To let the year continue to REALLY shine, I am featuring fine photos of great architecture, so we can continue to honor the brighter side of life. Part 4 features the beauty of skies of Chicago, Illinois in an aerial view, which also includes a view of Lake Shore Drive and Lake Michigan right before sunset. You can see the shadow from the buildings cast onto Lake Michigan at exactly 180° (directly behind my camera location in the Observatory), and a few boats as well. The photo includes a great photo of the 95 year old 680 North Lake Shore Drive, a 29-story building located in Streeterville which was originally named the American Furniture Mart, was built circa 1926. It also shows off the famous 53 year old Lake Point Tower, a tall curved three wing ‘Y’ shape building with the theme of the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai, United Arab Emirates by the famous Chicago architect Adrian Smith. It is the only residential existence in Chicago and only skyscraper east of Lake Shore Drive, and one of very few odd numbered addresses of Lake Shore Drive. It is located just north of the Chicago River at 505 North Lake Shore Drive, built in 1968 also in Streeterville. It is adjacent to the world famous 3,300-foot-long Navy Pier, also observed in the photograph. Navy Pier is still familiar being associated with summer festivals and its history includes the world famous Ferris wheel! Before public entertainment, it opened on July 15, 1916, serving as a dock for freights, passenger traffic, and indoor and outdoor recreation, and events like expositions and pageants that were held there over the years. I had the opportunity to visit Navy Pier three years in a row during the early 1980’s for the famous ChicagoFest summer festival of which I have a blog post with photos: Apr 26, 2021: Featured Photo: Architecture, Part 2 – Vintage Architecture – Navy Pier. Exquisite aerial views just like this one make the City of Chicago a highly exquisite and very enchanting city–among highly unique examples of the great architecture throughout the city. This also makes Chicago it’s very own, also a really great city to visit and spend an absolutely relaxing afternoon, especially a summer one like this! Date – July 1981.
