Today is National Online Recovery Day for 2025, on September 22nd every year, it is a day to honor the recovery from substance abuse via using online services, be it online, telephone. Zoom, or any other online resource. What a way to celebrate: any day, any time, video, audio or any other way that works with recovery. To continue my segment on better living through better health and freedom here, and throughout the year to come, in order to implement great healing–I will feature articles designed to improve physical, emotional and spiritual healing, especially in the fentanyl era.

People who need recovery make a great decision to be able to attend a physical meeting, but sometimes time is not very lenient to be able to make it to recovery resources. With the advent of the COVID-19 era, people really still needed the care of recovery resources. Because it simply was not possible or there were mandates by certain states, or even sickness. . .physical meetings were not possible and/or practical. That does not mean that they were not needed! The necessary resources are always needed, and save lives. Today these circumstances happen, albeit not as often, but the care of having an online recovery resources is still there and available.

Moderators are in essence directors of an online resource to be able to have a session flow properly, and inline with the onset mission statement. Making sure that all attendees are in a safe place online ,and that the resource is living up to it’s name is of utmost importance. . .for an resource to be available for everyone to feel not only safe being in the chat room, but also for the chat to be of such interest that not only does the attendee stay, but they come back in the future. Therefore a moderator is an absolute necessity when it comes to any online chat room. Sometimes a particular chat room has specified rules, i.e= the online user may have to be more than a static image, or be silent. Unfortunately, as with any group sharing, sometimes. . .a renegade attendee can attempt to interrupt the discussion with the use of profanity, trying to display vulgar and even pornagrahy, so a moderator is there to screen off these incidents, wither to cutting them off, or to squelch their sound source and video and let them continue to follow; and even ban someone from joining the resource for both the session, and/or a permanent ban..

All 12-step programs provide peer support for people quitting or cutting back on use of any substances, including the other resources may be in the individual’s best interest to trial. There are programs for families, peers and friends who are directly affected by problematic drug abuse and/or drinking. Combined with a treatment plan led by health professionals, mutual-support groups can offer a valuable added layer of support. Many health professionals in most modern times even have direct information to provide to individuals to find a proper support group. Even though the anonymous nature of mutual-support groups make it difficult for researchers to determine the success rates compared with those led by health professionals, many have become most assured in these modern days that they are indeed a complete asset in the reliance of being able to overcome a problem of dependence of substances.
There is room for anyone to realize that it is no joke to getting over the use of any drugs and/or alcohol use. Dedicating life to getting through life, having time to balance the day is paramount for every person. Meetings to an addict are not only a necessity, but the average addict likes going to a meeting. When it is either not possible or practical, having an online meeting available fills that gap. The reason National Online Recovery Day is important is to bring recognition to the available online resources in order to fill that gap.
