Original Cookies: Ruth Graves Wakefield is credited with inventing the chocolate chip cookie in 1938 at the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts. As a trained dietitian and baker, she made the cookies by adding chopped semi-sweet chocolate when she ran out of baker’s chocolate, intending for it to melt into the dough. Instead, the chocolate held its shape, creating the first chocolate chip cookie, initially named the “Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookie.” Some historians believe Wakefield may have intentionally designed the new dessert to offer a choice different from the existing butterscotch nut cookies. The cookie became popular, featured in Wakefield’s cookbook, and gained national attention when Nestlé printed the recipe on chocolate bar wrappers. During World War II, soldiers received these cookies in care packages, cementing their popularity. Today, the chocolate chip cookie is a beloved dessert worldwide.
