A Brief History:
Origination: National Disability Independence Day honors the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990. This day not only marks the anniversary of the ADA but also aims to raise awareness and dismantle the barriers that individuals with disabilities encounter on a daily basis. With the onset of the ADA, rules governing tearing down the barriers that affect anyone with a disability: like minimum width measurements to fit wheelchairs through in many places like hallways, doors, bathrooms, showers, and many, many more facets of living. Also, it prohibited use of too glossy of surfaces on flooring, and need for grab bars in many areas where a disabled person may be at, like a hospital, or even a bevel on a street corner’s sidewalk.

Rules For the Employer: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) offers safeguards against employment discrimination and enhances access to goods, services, and communications for individuals with disabilities. The observance of today’s National Day signifies a historical progression that has evolved over time. Indeed, every modification contributes to improved mobility and safety for those with disabilities.

Technology & Health: Beyond structural changes, the ADA Act has motivated designers to enhanced technology. Often, physical limitations restrict a person’s ability to access legal or health information. New assistive technologies make it possible to obtain the necessary information. As accessibility improves, the world continues to change in other ways.

Is My Business Up to Compliance? As an employer, it is important to evaluate the accessibility of your business for individuals with disabilities. The ADA enables people with disabilities to advocate for their rights as well. Acknowledge and promote businesses and organizations that prioritize accessibility. Designers and architects already have years of knowledge and wisdom to be able to build with the ADA in mind. In relation to the State Route 99 (SR 99) corridor, compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) generally pertains to guaranteeing accessibility for persons with disabilities in locations such as sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and transit stops.
