April celebrates National Garden Month! Keep your garden in great shape, and make 2025 a planting success, I am sharing some tips and pointers for keeping your garden in great shape. . .

Make sure you know your weather/climate zone so you can pay great attention to areas where it is all clear to plant without weather restrictions. Planting before the last frost date of the previous winter’s season can facilitate the need for covering, or moving of plants to make sure that the plants do not experience a freeze. . .as that will definitely make a permanent problem on your garden. Planting early will put a dent in your vacation plans, as you will need to be available to take proper action should a frost or a freeze warning be initiated for your area.

- Mulch is a game-changer. It’s amazing how three inches of last year’s leaves can work wonders in the garden. Not only does it keep pesky weeds at bay, but it also helps retain moisture and provides nourishment for the plants as it decomposes. It’s like a buffet for the greenery!
- Maintaining a large garden like mine can be quite a challenge, but makes it a loteasier. Instead of struggling with high-maintenance plants, opt for tough perennials like daylilies, rudbeckias, sedums, and catmints. They may not be the flashiest flowers, but they get the job done. And to top it off, there is the magic of mulch. By covering perennial beds with a thick layer of last year’s leaves, you create a barrier against weeds, kept the soil moist, and provided natural nutrients for all plants. It’s like a secret weapon for your gardening arsenal. And when you need something more durable, shredded wood-chip mulch comes to the rescue. It may take longer to break down, but it lasts longer and does the job just as well.

- Simplifying the care of a flower bed is key to minimizing maintenance. and taking the step of removing plants like balloon flowers and Russian sage from the garden, as their tendency to droop was a constant hassle. Even though the missing of their their presence, the beds require less attention and boast a more polished look. In the grand scheme of things, a beautiful border is one that can be managed effortlessly. By opting for fewer types of perennials, each with their own manageable requirements, the overall maintenance becomes a much smoother process.
🍈 Simplify Your Approach To Edges:
- Giving up some variety in the beds is a tough decision, but even harder is saying goodbye to the perfectly cut edges that were once meticulously maintained. Instead of spending hours edging every bed multiple times a season, a more efficient solution is in using a string trimmer to keep the edges tidy. The key is to create a gap between the edge and the plants, ensuring the space is weed-free, and to trim with precision and consistency.
