More History: The state of Oregon became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859, following a history of exploration and westward expansion, particularly through the Oregon Trail. Before statehood, the area was known as the Oregon Country, which included parts of present-day Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. The Lewis and Clark Expedition explored this region in 1805-1806. The Oregon Treaty in 1846 established the U. S. -Canada border at the 49th parallel, and the Oregon Territory was formed in 1848. When Oregon became a state, its constitution included an exclusion clause against African Americans. Oregon’s history also involved conflicts with Native American tribes and is marked by economic development from natural resources. The state is known for its natural wonders, such as Crater Lake and Mount Hood.
