A Brief History:
Origination: National Jelly Bean Day celebrates the origin of jelly bean. People celebrate every day with jelly bean, and special occasions like Easter, anniversaries, birthdays and a great day, to go alongside. The history of jelly bean in 1861, when a Boston candymaker named William Schrafft introduced jelly beans to the world. He cleverly advertised in a local newspaper, urging people to send his delightful jelly beans to Union soldiers during the American Civil War to boost their morale. Schrafft is hailed as the inventor of jelly beans, and he marketed them as an affordable “penny candy”. Interestingly, the idea of coating jelly beans with a hard shell can be traced back to the 17th century when French confectioners coated Jordan almonds with a syrupy shell. The manufacturing process of making a jelly bean takes 7-21 days to finalize as the “rolling” process incurs that much time.
More Recent Evolution: By the early 1900s, jelly beans had become a beloved penny candy, and they were the first candy to be sold by weight rather than individually. However, it wasn’t until 1930 that jelly beans truly captured the attention of the average American consumer, thanks to their association with Easter festivities. People only began to recognize the resemblance between jelly beans and Easter eggs after some time. Initially, jelly beans were a delightful treat enjoyed mainly during the Christmas season. However, in the late 1930s, they gained popularity as a popular filler for Easter baskets. It’s astonishing to think that now, jelly bean manufacturers produce a staggering 16 billion jelly beans exclusively for Easter!
The Last Few Decades: President Ronald Reagan was famously fond of jelly beans. He turned to them as a way to quit smoking his pipe and from then on, he always kept a stash of jelly beans by his side. The presidential jet even had a special cup holder designed to hold his beloved jelly beans. In fact, he even sent jelly beans aboard the challenger space shuttle in the 80s! A remarkable portrait of the President, made entirely from 10,000 Jelly Belly beans, now proudly hangs in the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif. Interestingly, it is said that Reagan’s love for jelly beans led to the creation of the blueberry flavored jelly bean, despite the fact that Ronald’s real favorite jelly belly flavor was the black “licorice” flavor. When the Goelitz company prepared a red, white, and blue jelly bean collection for his inauguration, they realized they didn’t have a blue jelly bean. That’s when they came up with the idea of the blueberry flavor! The party was a huge success, with a staggering 40 million jelly beans consumed. the last few centuries, jelly bean has evolved into an industry that involves employment opportunities, the building of factories, holidays based off the industry, and a lot of sweet things! Unfortunately it does keep dentists in business as well, as because on the downside, the sugar is a direct decay factor to tooth enamel and also a breeding ground for bacteria that eventually causes plaque and makes the teeth come from the whiteness that teeth need to be considered “brilliant”.

More Recently: Today, jelly bean still presents its taste in many forms, including hard and soft jelly bean, powders, gums, and also of course chocolate and cocoa. Jelly Bean is is still the very delicious dessert that it has always attained from back in the old days every year. Every year, countless companies come out with a new variation, and present companies introduce different renditions and even “limited edition” variations of the recipes used to produce jelly bean and confectionary products. More and more renditions and recipes have arisen in more recent years.
