What It Means to Be Safe: It is imperative to have your home and/or business safe at all times in case of the outbreak of a fire. The second week of October teaches us to get ready and also to practice safety.
Ways to be ready: Know your emergency phone number–usually 9-1-1. Making sure that if there was a fire, that you are able to respond in a fashion that is not panic! Panic make the possibilities to do the right thing, in order to prevent further loss–especially of yours and your family’s lives. Establish a safety plan and an escape route plan. Post them in a visible location. Practice fire safety drills, to make sure that your escape plan works–without, and before any fire.
A Brief History:
Origination: The week was introduces Fire Prevention Week was started by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Fire Prevention Week teaches children and adults how to stay safe in the event of a fire. The Fire Prevention Week (FPW) on the National Fire Protection Association‘s site teaches us resources that can educate and have us be ready just in case.
Remember to Have Equipment: Waiting for the safety of a firefighter to show up could be too late. See the below recommendations of what to have in every home or business.
Second Week in October is the Time to Participate: It is imperative to have everyone involved: children, adults, everyone. Be involved, ask to set up a program with your city, village or township to assist a partnership program with your local firefighter. Make it a fun time, and it will be easier to hold a drill, so that if and when a fire happens you are ready.
To the Fallen Heroes : Remembering those who have fallen is important. It also shows not only respect, but that they were willing to put their lives ahead of anything–to make sure that you and I are safe from the perils of fire.

A Few Facts:
I am sharing a few facts, and more, some trivia, some not trivial. . .
Have the Following Equipment:
- Fire extinguishers
- Fire alarms
- Keeping all electric equipment in check and safe from frayed and loose wire connection
- Checking to make sure that your escape plan is practiced.
- Make sure fire extinguishers are the right type. There are different types for every situation. See the below table.
- Make sure that all these pointers are practiced in your car or truck. Safety is equally important when you are commuting! Have a plan for while you are driving, should the outbreak of fire happen.

|
Fires in ordinary combustible materials, such as wood, cloth, paper, rubber, and many plastics.

Class B Fires
|
Fires in flammable liquids, combustible liquids, petroleum greases, tars, oils,
oil-based paints, solvents, lacquers, alcohols, and flammable gases. |

Class C Fires
|
Fires that involve energized electrical equipment.

Class D Fires
|
Fires in combustible metals, such as magnesium, titanium, zirconium, sodium, lithium, and potassium.

Class K Fires
|
Fires in cooking appliances that involve combustible cooking media (vegetable or animal oils and fats). |
