The Beginning Years: It is believed that The first people living in Utah are called the Paleoindians by archaeologists The first Europeans didn’t arrive in Utah until the 1700’s when Spanish explorer Juan Antonio de Rivera visited in the year 1765, claiming the land for Spain, as he found the Colorado River. By 1776, another expedition had entered Utah from Mexico, led by Franciscan priests looking for a way to get to California. Then by 1847, Brigham Young’s group of 148 Mormon pioneers traveled to Utah, settling into the Salt Lake Valley, naming their settlement the Great Salt Lake City. By the next year, 1,650 more Mormons arrived, growing rapidly with new settlements forming, like Ogden, Provo, and Farmington.
More History: The state of Utah Settlement during the mid-to-late 1800’s included the Latter-day Saints, migrating to the Salt Lake Valley, and seeking religious freedom by the year 1847. By May of 1869, the first transcontinental railroad was completed near Promontory, Utah. The Territory of Utah was an organized effort of an incorporated territory in the United States that existed from September 9, 1850 to January 4, 1896, when the final section of territory annexed, and the State of Utah was admitted as the 45th state.
Climate of Utah: Utah primarily has a dry, semi-arid, desert-type climate, being one of the driest states in the country, and one of the lowest relative humidity percentages. In December the average highest relative humidity is 74.3% and in July the average lowest humidity is 35.9%. Temperatures in the summer can get as hot at 105°F. Winter can get as cold as 5°F. Winter and summer air is a dry air. Summers are hot, frequently reaching above 100°F, while winters are cold and snowy. Utah’s Cottonwood Canyons are one of the snowiest places in the world, with the Alta region averaging a whopping 551 inches of snow per year.
The Great Location of Utah: Utah is a landlocked state in the Mountain West region west of the continental divide of the Western United States. It is bordered to its east by Colorado, to its northeast by Wyoming, to its north by Idaho, to its south by Arizona, and to its west by Nevada. Utah also touches a corner of New Mexico in the southeast.
