The Beginning Years: Montana is home to the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, which memorializes the historic 1876 battle between the Sioux tribe and U.S. Army, often referred to as “Custer’s Last Stand.” Montana including early explorers, Native Americans, Louisiana Purchase, and after the discovery of gold in the region, Montana originally consisted of an area mostly of the monstrous Missouri territory from the Louisiana Purchase, and was later designated as a United States territory as the Montana Territory on May 26, 1864. Montana had rapid population growth, and became the 41st state on November 8, 1889. Mining and logging attracted many immigrants during the 19th century because they were a big part of Montana’s economy.
More History: Between 1909 and 1917, thousands of people from all over the world rushed to Montana to fulfill a dream of owning their own farm. When larger scale immigration of the initial homestead boom in Montana ended, still a continued attraction continued ass ome new immigrants from Mexico looking for work, and farmers needed people to work in the sugar beet fields in eastern Montana, and many Mexicans found jobs there. German-speaking Hutterites came from Europe as early as 1911 seeking religious freedom, living on large farms called colonies. Even more Hutterites came to Montana after World War II between 1939 to 1945. Big machines took over even though people still worked as miners and loggers through the 1950’s to 1970’s, but those industries didn’t need as many workers as they did before World War II. In the late 1970’s, many Hmongs (hill people from Southeast Asia who fought on the same side as U.S. troops during the Vietnam War) settled into the Missoula area Montana.
Climate of Montana: Montana, consisting of totally landlocked, continental shelf zonal climate, is one of the coldest regions in the United States, with −70°F being observed at Rogers Pass in 1954. The climate is like most of the Great Plains: Montana is semiarid, with hot summers and cold winters, and an average annual precipitation being only about about 13 inches, being subject to cycles of drought followed by periods of unusually heavy rainfall and flooding. Montana also offers a varying of seasons, with strong winters and warm summers. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 12°F to 85°F and is rarely below -8°F or above 94°F.
The Great Location of Montana: Montana’s name derives from the Spanish word montaña, meaning “mountainous” because of the state’s many mountains, with at least 300 mountain peaks that are over 9,600 feet tall! Gold and silver deposits were mined from the Montana mountains in the 1800s, hence Montana’s nickname, “The Treasure State.” Montana is the 4th largest state in the United States, and an expansive absolutely gorgeous landscape,. Montana contains Yellowstone National Park, the first landmark national park that is located in southern Montana and also northern Wyoming. Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden played the key roles in establishing Yellowstone as the Nation’s first national park.
