In the U.S., Father’s Day was founded in 1910 in the city of Spokane, Washington at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas. Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Her father, a Civil War veteran named William Jackson Smart, who was a single parent who had raised his six children there..
U.S. Evolution: Father’s Day is held on the third Sunday of June in the United States. The idea for Father’s Day came after social activist Anna Jarvis had proposed Mother’s Day in the early 1900’s.
