Here is today’s featured photo. The December event is coming…”12 Days of Christmas”…Twelve nice shots Christmas related photos! The event will start on Friday, December 13th, so come join us every day!! Meanwhile I am continuing my featuring photos from California in the interim. I am wrapping up the feature with a best of California: Photos corrected in the darkroom. Here is a great shot of the front of the famous Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena. I dropped the darkroom exposure because the difference between the foreground and the mountains was overwhelming for the meter so it had me fooled and I overexposed the photo by 1½ f/stops. This definitely improved the shot!! Date – November 1991.
Photo taken with a Nikon FE camera through a Nikon 26 mm lens, filter=polarizer, Aperture=16 f/stop, shutter-speed 1/125th second, loaded with Fujicolor 400 Color 135 Negative Film processed with C-41 Processing Chemicals, and a Type C Print using the RA-4 enlargement paper process with an exposure level dropped in the darkroom at lessening of at -0.33%, onto a 4X6″ semi-gloss print.
☼FACT: By correcting the exposure in the darkroom, the more you correct it, the less the color saturation in a photo, because the color reflected off objects is lost by correcting the exposure in the darkroom. The more correction, the more loss of color, whether brightening a shot or darkening it up. You typically lose blue on darkening, and bright colors like yellow and red brightening, but colors are never brightened by darkroom correction. The same holds exactly true for digital photography, whereby you use programs like Lightroom to correct the photo, or scan them darker or lighter. You are always better off getting the proper exposure onsite the day you take the photo, with your lens and camera alone. ☼
