The Beginning Years: It is believed that Nevada’s ancient history shows it was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years, with evidence of their settlements and rock art. Archaeological findings indicate human presence in Nevada, particularly in the Great Basin, with the Great Basin Desert Archaic Period. During the Pleistocene Ice Age, large animals like mammoths and camels roamed Nevada. The area also featured Glacial Lake Lahontan, and the oldest petroglyphs in North America. Native tribes included the Shoshone, Paiute, Washoe, and Mohave.

More History: Nevada’s state of becoming a state in the United States gained modern Nevada in 1848 after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican-American War. It was initially included in Utah Territory, with the first settlement established by Mormons in 1849. As miners flocked to Nevada searching for silver in 1859, Virginia City became a booming center, although the silver rush declined by the late 1890s. Nevada became a territory in 1861 and achieved statehood in 1864. Governance was structured with multiple elected officials to prevent concentration of power. The economy shifted from mining to ranching before reviving with new discoveries. After World War II, Nevada experienced significant growth due to gambling and federal spending, transforming into a recreational hub and attracting retirees, especially in Las Vegas.
