A Brief History:
Black Forest Cake: National Black Forest Cake Day celebrates a special originally German treat. Black forest cake. People celebrate special occasions like anniversaries, birthdays and weddings with black forest cake is some people’s most special favorite choice when it comes to selection of cake. My nephew insists on his black forest cake for special occasions.

Black Forest Cake Evolution: Black forest cake evolved in Germany in the early 1900s. Several pioneering chefs are credited with inventing this cake, including Joseph Keller in 1915 and Edwin Hildebrand in 1934.

What is Black Forest Cake? Black forest cake is a cake that is baked with layer several sheets of chocolate cake, then whipped cream and cherries between each layer to make Black Forest cake. It is then decorated with whipped cream, maraschino cherries, and chocolate shavings. Some traditional German recipes call for sour cherries between the layers and a Kirschwasser (a clear liquor that is distilled from tart cherries) added into the cake. In most circumstances in the United States the alcohol is not used. However, in Germany, liqueur is considered mandatory, or the cake can not legally be sold under the Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte name. Nonetheless, any baked cake that is made with alcohol will never contain any liquor when it is done, due to the fact that the alcohol has way long evaporated by the time it is baked.

Why The Term Black Forest? Black Forest Gateau actually takes its name from a distinctive and fiery kirsch alcohol made from Black Forest sour cherries.
