Can you elaborate on Seth, Kat, and Dylan’s complex relationship?
At the heart of Willful Parties is the intricate and emotionally charged relationship between Seth, Kat, and Dylan. Their three-way sexual relationship began two and a half years before their graduation from law school in Chicago. The story opens at their law school graduation party, with Dylan set to move to California, creating a critical turning point for their dynamic. Each character is intelligent, driven, and on a path of personal growth, facing challenges that shift their emotional connections.
Kat, in her mid-twenties, becomes the emotional pivot. Her insecurities and past traumas influence her decisions, especially as Dylan prepares to leave. She worries Seth, as a bisexual man, will eventually prioritize another male partner over her, leaving her feeling inadequate. To protect herself, she insists they should cherish the past but move forward as merely friends. Despite this resolve, her attraction to Seth and Dylan remains strong, pulling her back into the relationship’s complexities. She struggles to trust that Dylan’s affection for her is genuine and not an effort to please Seth. After a traumatic event, Dylan’s unwavering support helps Kat through her darkest moments. Their deepening friendship evolves into a profound emotional and sexual connection, reshaping the dynamic of their trio.
Seth, a confident bisexual with a free-spirited attitude, initiated their threesome. Slightly older than Kat and Dylan, he brings life experience and emotional maturity to the group. His commitment to their connection is unshakable, though he learns through a pivotal legal battle (no spoilers here) to value Kat and Dylan as individuals, not just as parts of their threesome. For Seth, Kat is a beautiful, dynamic, and resilient woman whose acceptance of his bisexuality makes her his “unicorn.” Dylan, on the other hand, is Seth’s equal in passion and ambition. There is a striking symmetry in the opposing challenges Seth and Dylan face, but yet they help one another heal and grow.
Dylan, who once strictly identified as gay, has his perceptions challenged after a drunken night when Seth initiates their first threesome. Dylan is hesitant, but ultimately finds himself fully engaged in the experience. His love for Kat forces him to reevaluate his identity, creating confusion as he struggles to acknowledge this shift. Seth’s easy charm and ability to impress Dylan’s politically minded family offer Dylan comfort and stability. It doesn’t hurt that he looks like a blue-eyed California dream.
Their complex dynamic is a testament to love, resilience, acceptance, mutual support, and the power of connection in all its forms. Through legal battles, personal setbacks, and moments of self-discovery, they explore the complexities of love, trust, and identity.
Can you embellish on how keeping the kindle going on a complex relationship?
At the core of Kat, Seth, and Dylan’s relationship lies a deep foundation of attraction and respect, creating an irresistible pull between them. Yet, their lives are filled with stresses and challenges that test and strengthen their bonds in unexpected ways. Intimacy often becomes a way to release tension, but it can also introduce complications that need navigating. For instance, studying for and taking the bar exam puts significant pressure on both Seth and Kat, simultaneously pushing them apart and bringing them closer together. Passing the exam, however, becomes a moment of celebration that reinforces their threesome in a joyous and intimate way.
Each character carries their own set of challenges or personal trauma, and they turn to one another for emotional support. In their mid to late twenties, a stage of life where support from friends and chosen family is crucial, they discover the strength to face their struggles together. Through these shared trials and moments of vulnerability, coupled with spontaneous and meaningful expressions of intimacy, their bonds deepen. As the individual pairings within the trio grow stronger, and from that base, their dynamic as a threesome truly takes shape, blossoming into a relationship defined by mutual care, passion, and understanding.
How does Seth’s determination to be admirable set in, despite the graduation threat?
Seth’s an easy-going, confident guy who feels comfortable in his own skin. He’s convinced all three have found their perfect relationship and is unwaveringly determined to bring his partners back together after their separation. However, to achieve this, Seth must embrace patience and understanding, giving his partners the time and space they need to grow, mature, and discover themselves. His story is one of resilience and transformation, as he learns that love isn’t just about holding on, but also about supporting and uplifting each other through life’s complexities.
Will there be a sequel to the book on the growth of the maturing character’s lives as they go their separate ways? (If it is a surprise, you can elaborate on any other aspect)
Willful Parties is a standalone novel. However, Kat and Dylan are significant side characters in my next novel, which will hopefully be published in 2025. Kat and Seth will appear as side characters in a novella that follows Overruling Judgment. Perhaps, at some point, Kat, Seth, and Dylan will get their own novella. All my main characters will make some appearances in future books as they all serve as found family to one another.
