Yesterday was National French Toast Day for 2024! These are by far very delicious! Butter, maple syrup and/or fruit, or both! Served up with or without whipped cream! Enjoy it morning, noon or night. . .Or just the perfect midnight snack–some nice French toast. . .

A Brief History:
Origination: French toast has been a popular dish for both dessert and breakfast for more than 1500 years. It originated in Rome, but in France and in a 15th century English version, it was known as pain perdu, which means “lost bread,” because it uses old bread to help cut down on food waste. The roots of French toast trace back to ancient Rome, specifically from a cookbook called Apicius around 300 A.D. The original recipe involved soaking bread in milk and eggs, frying it, and serving it with honey, known as pan dulcis. Similar dishes appeared in Europe during the Middle Ages. The dish made its way to the United States in the 1700’s, brought by an innkeeper named Joseph French in Albany, New York. It was first printed as “French toast” in 1871, but it is also referred to as German toast, eggy bread, and other names.

More Recent Origin: The taste of French toast can be enhanced with a splash of fresh orange juice or by incorporating sautéed apples and cinnamon. To make French toast more appealing to children, consider cutting it into sticks for easy dipping into syrup. For a healthier option, replace sugary syrup with a fruit puree and add fresh fruit pieces. Incorporating nuts and seeds can provide a delightful crunch to this tasty breakfast dish, and a small dollop of whipped cream can elevate the experience significantly.
