A Brief History on Cappuccino:
Founded By: Cappuccino variations can include using cream, non-dairy milk, or flavorings like cocoa or cinnamon. The drink’s name is inspired by the Capuchin friars and the color of their attire, which is similar to the color of the coffee when milk is added. The cappuccino was first created in Vienna in the 18th century. The Italian version of the cappuccino was developed in the early 20th century after the espresso machine was invented. The modern cappuccino we know today has evolved over time, with early versions featuring whipped cream and spices. The drink gained popularity in Italy during the Austrian domination, spreading to other parts of the country after World War I.

DIfference Between Cappuccino and Coffee: A cappuccino is an Italian coffee made with espresso, hot milk, and steamed milk foam. Regular coffee can be strong, but never the same as cappuccino. Cappuccinos and coffee differ in ingredients, taste, preparation, size, and calories. Cappuccinos have espresso, steamed milk, and foam, while coffee is black. Cappuccinos are creamier, sweeter, and richer due to added milk and espresso, while coffee is simpler in taste. Cappuccinos are smaller than lattes, and higher in calories due to milk and foam, but adding sweeteners and milk to coffee can make it equally rich in calories.
More Recently: In 1945, Achille Gaggia invented the modern espresso machine, which helped popularize the cappuccino. By the mid-1990’s, cappuccinos became more widely available in North America through upscale coffee houses. In the late 1990s to early 2000s, cappuccinos gained popularity in the United States alongside the growth of the American coffee industry. By the start of the 21st century, a simplified version of the cappuccino was offered at fast-food chains. Making a cappuccino correctly involves steaming the milk to achieve the right balance of foam, making it a challenging espresso-based drink to prepare. Skilled baristas can also create artistic designs by pouring milk onto the espresso.

Other Variations of Cappuccino:
- Red Eye Cappuccino: An old world referral to increase the standard of caffeine to a normal cup of coffee. The ratio is 1 shot of espresso plus a 6 oz. of drip-brewed coffee in a 8 oz. cappuccino mug.
- Black Eye Cappuccino: It is a doubled version of the Red Eye and is very high in caffeine served in an 8-10 oz. cappuccino mug.
- Cappuccino: A creamy coffee drink, usually consumed at breakfast time in Italy and is loved worldwide. It is indulgent because of its thick layer of foam and additional flavorings can be added as well. Served with 1-2 shots of espresso to 2 oz. of steamed milk plus 2 oz. of foamed milk and an optional sprinkling of chocolate powder in a 6-8 oz. cappuccino mug.
- Flat White: This originates from New Zealand and Australia, and very similar to a cappuccino, but lacks the foam layer and chocolate powder. Steamed milk is added onto the bottom instead of using frothed on the top. It is served with 1 shot of espresso to 4 oz. of steamed milk in a 6 oz. glass tumbler.
- Café au Lait: It is typically made with a French press cappuccino instead of an espresso shot in order to bring out the different flavors of coffee. It is then paired with scalded milk instead of steamed milk and poured to a 50/50 ratio. It is served up with 5 oz. of French press coffee to 5 oz. of scalded milk and served in a 12 oz. cappuccino mug.
- Iced Cappuccino: Iced coffees have become very popular in the summertime in the United States and abroad. The recipes have some variance, with some locations choosing to interchange milk with water in the recipe and often served with a stronger amount of coffee due to the fact that the drink will hit the ice often with flavoring syrups added to preference. Served with a 2 oz. drip coffee or espresso to 4 oz. of ice and 4-6 oz of milk or water plus flavoring syrup to preference into a 14 oz. mixing glass.
